What are MDROs?

Multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) are a serious public health threat worldwide and have become a major source of endemic infection in healthcare settings, including hospitals and long-term care facilities. These superbugs are often normal intestinal bacteria, such as E. coli, that have developed resistance to most antibiotics. When MDRO infections occur, there are few effective treatment options. To make matters worse, people can carry these organisms without having symptoms and unknowingly transmit to others who may become infected and severely ill.
